BRITS 2012 - Round up Release

The BRITS Snow & Music Festival has wrapped up its eighth year of world-class riding, pumping parties and some adventurous après sessions in the freestyle mecca of Laax, Switzerland. In true BRITS style, festival-goers and competitors were treated to relentless sunshine, (plus a bonus powder day at the beginning of the week) for the four days of British Championship events in Snowboard & Freeski Slopestyle, Halfpipe, Cross and Big Air.

Protest Snowboard Slopestyle Championships - Review

Friday 23rd March, 2012 – The fourth and final day of competition at the BRITS 2012 saw Jamie Nicholls and Katie Ormerod destroy the perfectly shaped Laax park to take home the gold in the Protest Snowboard Slopestyle Championships. The cream of British shredders saved their best for last - bathed in glorious sunshine, the level of riding was ridiculous with an array of super smooth double corks, 9s, 10s and even a double frontflip.

British Freeski Big Air Championships - Review

Friday 23rd March – In true BRITS style the sun continued to beat down for the final day of competition and the British Freeski Big Air Championships. Anticipation was high and riders were primed to push themselves to the next level. An incredibly high standard was set in qualifiers making way for an exciting final. Riders had three runs to throw down their best tricks and Molly Summerhayes stepped it up to take gold for the women while Lucas Hogland continued his winning streak taking gold for the men.

Thursday 22 March, 2012 – For a third day running the BRITS was treated to scorching weather and sick riding as Katie Ormerod and Sam Turnbull took home the gold in the Snowboard Big Air Championships. The Laax shapers outdid themselves once again by building an absolute beast of a kicker, which at 20 metres was the biggest in BRITS history.

Protest Freeski Slopestyle Championships - Review

Thursday 22nd March – The sun continued to blaze down for day three of The BRITS and the Protest Slopestyle Championships. The glorious sunshine did mean the course slowed down slightly and the wind picked up but this didn’t stop skiers pulling out all the stops on the exciting new slopestyle course. Ultimately it was two BRITS newcomers, Lucas Hagland and Chloe Hardy that reined victorious and bagged themselves the top podium spot.

Dare2b Snowboard Halfpipe Championships - Review

Wednesday 21 March, 2012 - Day two of The BRITS saw the best of British pipe riders go head to head in the Dare2b Snowboard Halfpipe Championships. Blazing sunshine, a perfect pipe and MC James Thorne’s banter created a party atmosphere for spectators who were treated to some outstanding riding with Henry Shackleton and Kate Foster taking home the gold. It was good to see an increase in the number of kids competing, the youngest being seven year-old Lewis Hopkinson, showing that British halfpipe riding has a very bright future ahead.

Trespass Skiercross Championships - Review

Wednesday 21 March, 2012 – The new permanent Cross course in Laax was put through its paces on day two of The BRITS in the Trespass Skiercross Championships. Fresh snow and blue skies meant conditions were pristine and with Bon Jovi’s ‘Living On a Prayer’ blaring out from the speakers competitors were psyched to get racing. There were plenty of wipe-outs in the qualifiers and semi’s as everyone was pushing hard to have their chance at taking home the coveted British Champion title.

Trespass Snowboardcross Championships - Review

Tuesday 20 March, 2012 – The BRITS 2012 kicked off in style with the Trespass Snowboardcross Championships today. The competitors were greeted with blue skies, warm weather, loads of snow and a perfectly shaped course. GB coach James Foster tweaked Laax’s first permanent snowboardcross course and the riders were eager to get stuck in. Head judge Andy Mills said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better day, the weather and the snow were both perfect.”

Tuesday 20th March – A fresh covering of snow, Laax’s pristine superpipe and blue bird conditions greeted riders on the first day of competition at the Dare 2b Halfpipe Championships. It was go big or go home for Britain’s finest skiers with BRITS regular and Dare 2b rider James Machon taking gold for the guys and BRITS newcomer Janina Kuzma exploding on to the scene to take the top spot for the girls.
